Camping Information: Maps and Trails
Glacier National Park is made up of pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and beautiful lakes. Over half of the guests report taking a hike at Glacier National Park. At Glacier National Park there are over 700 miles of trail provided for hiking. The two popular hiking trails are Lake McDonald Valley and Logan Pass. Lake McDonald Valley is nearly ten miles long and 500 feet deep. Logan Pass includes a variety of hiking trails ranging in distances. Logan Pass is the highest elevation reachable for a car at Glacier National Park reaching 6,640 feet. When going camping at Glacier National Park, you can enjoy the crackling of a campfire and the beauty of sleeping under the stars. There are 13 different campgrounds at Glacier National Park. Fish Creek and St. Mary are the two most popular campgrounds. There are approximately 1,009 campsites.

Fish Creek is the second largest campground in Glacier National Park. It is located on the western side of the park and is at an elevation of about 3,500 feet. This area usually receives the most rainfall. Weather can be varied including snow in the summer. Fish Creek is named for its noticeable glacier-carved terrain and left over glaciers dating back to the Ice Ages nearly 10,000 years ago. St. Mary is the largest campground on the east side of the park. It is located near two of the popular scenic byways: Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass. The aspen trees that grace St. Mary's, flutter in spring and summer breezes and provide splashes of color. If you decide to go backpacking through the backcountry it requires a special permit. Make sure to carry bear spray to protect yourself against grizzly and black bears. The Nyack / Coal Creek and Glenns Lake areas are popular backcountry destinations. When visiting Nyack / Coal Creek and Glenns Lake, make sure you do not walk off the trails when the tread is muddy, properly store food, garbage, cookware, etc. in designated food storage devices, and keep campfires small and within the fire pits.
